  • Adrenal glands, also known as supra-renal glands, are the small, triangular-shaped glands located on top of the kidneys. Adrenal glands produce hormones (e.g. cortisol, aldosterone, epinephrine and norepinephrine) that help regulate your metabolism, immune system, blood pressure, response to stress and other essential functions.

Signs and symptoms of adrenal insufficiency or dysfunction may include:

  • Fatigue
  • Body aches
  • Sleep disturbances or lack of sleep
  • Unexplained weight loss or gain
  • Low or high blood pressure
  • Lightheadedness
  • Loss of body hair
  • Skin discoloration (hyper or hypo pigmentation)

Adrenal insufficiency can be diagnosed by blood tests and special stimulation tests that show inadequate levels of adrenal hormones. However, mild dysfunction or burnout from chronic stress is not easily diagnosed with conventional blood tests. A complete workup of the hypothalamo-pituitary axis can be done to identify imbalances in production of hormones associated  with the adrenal glands.
